Why waste routes need more than a line on a plan
When you are planning a bathroom refurbishment, the position of a toilet, basin, bath or shower is only the visible part of the drainage decision. Every fitting needs a practical route to an existing connection, and that route must work with the structure and access available in your property.
That is why drainage and waste information is most useful when it is read alongside the floor plan, elevations and existing conditions. A drawing can show where the bathroom fittings sit, but the important question is how the pipework reaches the soil stack (the main vertical waste pipe), drain or other suitable connection without creating avoidable problems during installation.

How your property changes the drainage layout
The position of the existing soil stack
The soil stack is often the main constraint when moving a toilet. A bathroom on the other side of the house may look like a straightforward layout change, but the distance to the existing stack can affect the route, the amount of boxed-in pipe covering required and whether the proposed position is practical.
A drawing should make the intended connection clear rather than leaving the installer to work it out after the room has been stripped. It should also identify whether the existing stack is internal or external, where access is available and whether other appliances or bathrooms already discharge into it.
The floor construction and joist direction
Suspended timber floors and solid floors present different challenges. With timber floors, the direction and position of floor joists (the structural beams beneath a floor) can limit where waste pipes can run. Cutting or drilling structural timber without proper consideration is not a design shortcut. It can create a structural issue as well as delaying the installation.
Solid floors can remove some of the joist restrictions, but they may require carefully planned routes, channels or raised sections. The finished floor height matters too. A route that appears workable in a simple plan may affect thresholds, shower levels or the transition into the landing and adjoining rooms.
The required fall and available space
Waste pipes rely on gravity. They need a continuous route with a suitable downhill slope, while avoiding sharp changes in direction and points where debris or standing water could become a problem. The available depth beneath a floor, inside a wall or within a space set aside for pipes and services determines whether that route can be achieved discreetly.
This is particularly important when a bathroom is being created in a different part of the property or when a shower is being installed with a low-level tray. The intended finished level, trap position and pipe route all need to work together. If there is not enough depth, the design may need to change rather than forcing the installation on site.
What the drawings should help you understand
A useful CAD pack should allow you to see more than the final positions of the fittings. Depending on the project, it may need to clarify:
- The direction of waste flow
- The proposed connection points
- The relationship between new pipework and the existing soil stack
- Areas where pipes pass through floors, walls or service zones
- Access points that must remain available for maintenance
- Possible clashes with joists, electrics, hot and cold services or other building elements
- Whether boxing, false walls or changes in floor level are needed
This information helps separate a genuine design decision from an installation problem. For example, moving a basin may be relatively simple where it remains close to an existing route. Moving a toilet, adding a hidden toilet cistern or relocating a shower across a solid floor can involve much more coordination.
Why access matters after the bathroom is finished
Drainage should not only function on the day the bathroom is completed. Traps (the water-sealed bends beneath fittings), connections and inspection points may need to be reached later for cleaning or repair. Covering a connection permanently beneath fixed furniture or a tiled finish can make a minor maintenance issue far more disruptive.
For that reason, the drawing review should consider how the room will be used and maintained, not just how it will look. A boxed-in route may be the right solution, but its size, position and access need to be understood before wall or floor panels are fitted and tiling begins.
